The department’s Freedom from

Saving on registration costs is not the only way to save bucks in this poor economy, either.

According to Will County Health Department health educator Michelle Marek, a bonus of more than $1,460 is in store for those who quit for good. That’s the average cost of a year’s worth of cigarettes, she said.

It’s definitely worth it financially, Marek said, but to many, the health benefits to quit smoking far outweigh the monetary ones.

“Many of the health benefits to quitting smoking happen really, really fast,” she said. “In only a matter of hours, your body begins to get healthier. Within two hours, the nicotine begins to leave your system. Within six hours, your heart rate and blood pressure begin to decrease. Your circulation improves within two weeks, as the blood vessels that were constricted by the nicotine begin to relax.”

Smoking coupled with obesity raises death risk

Everyone knows smoking and being obese is not healthy for you, but now a new study shows the odds of dying early are highest among obese smokers.

“We know that obesity and smoking by themselves are important health risk factors,” said lead researcher Annemarie Koster, an epidemiologist at the U.S. National Institute on Aging. “We found that smoking and obesity are independent predictors of mortality, but smoking and being obese especially increases the mortality risk.”

Smoking and obesity both carry a significant mortality risk, but particularly smoking, Koster said. “It seems that smoking cessation was associated with significantly lower mortality risk in every weight group,” she said. “Quitting smoking will definitely improve your mortality risk, no matter in what weight group you are.” Losing weight will also lower mortality risk, Koster said. “Both losing weight and quitting smoking will increase your health and lower your mortality risk,” she said.

The report was published in the November issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

For the study, Koster’s group collected data on 3.5 million members of the AARP, aged 50 to 71. In 1995-1996, and again in 1996-1997, AARP sent out questionnaires asking people about diet, family history of cancer, physical activity, hormone replacement therapy, weight, waist size, and smoking.

It was at under my house with my best friend. Later at my friend’s house we smoked with his older sister. We both asked her for a smoke. I guess she though it was cute - her little brother and his friend trying to act so grown-up and cool - and over the course of the evening, she let us both have several cigarettes.

We didn’t really like smoking but one of the reason we had so many cigarettes is that we liked the idea of smoking. When I’d get a cigarette, I’d take a big drag or two, cough like crazy for several minutes and then I’d pass it to my friend. He’d do the same thing - inhale once or twice and practically hack up a lung as he waited to be able to breathe again. By the time we had two or three big drags each, the cigarette was gone. But by the end of the evening we were puffing away just like regular smokers do. We thought we were the coolest. At the time I didn’t think about how hard it could be to stop smoking cigarettes when I got older.

I smoked cigarettes all through high school and while I was in the Navy, along with other things. It was the 60’s and 70’s after all. It just seemed to make every event better, make me mellower and feel cooler. I used to love to go down to the pool hall, put some quarters in the jukebox, and shoot with a cigarette hanging from the side of my mouth. After all everyone smoked. No one even thought about it. In the Navy it was another reason to take a break. It was something to fiddle with in your hands when you were feeling socially awkward and an excuse to go outside and take a smoke break with your buddies or just stretch your legs. And it made it so much easier to make new friends and acquaintances.

That last detail is something non-smokers don’t understand. When I finally quit smoking cigarettes I don’t think it wasn’t the nicotine cravings that made it hard. I don’t believe I was ever really physically addicted to cigarettes. It was not having the social contact that I had enjoyed before. When you’re outside a building or at a party with other smokers, there’s a natural social bond the forms with other smokers. You can ask for or offer up a cigarette or you can get a light. It makes a good way to start a conversation or to meet new people even though it may seem strange to say.

And besides that, just the fact that you are all smokers not only gives you something in common, but provides you a feeling of camaraderie that’s based on the fact that everyone is viewed kind of like social lepers by the society around them. Among smokers, there’s a certain spirit of “we are all in this together” that can make you nearly feel like your abandoning your family when you stop smoking cigarettes.

If I hadn’t had a cold that was driving me nuts, as well as a girlfriend who nagged me incessantly, I probably never would have stopped smoking. I haven’t smoked now for over thirty years, but when I was with some friends a while back I kind of missed the camaraderie and the relaxation that cigarettes furnished.

Conversational Hypnosis, How Does It Work?

Chances are you have experienced conversational hypnosis firsthand and perhaps many times in your life. Milton Erickson, master hypnotist, first developed the underlying principles of conversational hypnosis. He believed that trance states were relatively common and most people drifted into this altered consciousness several times a day. This usually occurs during periods of waiting or intense concentration.

Conversational hypnosis has the potential to impact many situations and is most productive in the business world. Basically, the state of concentration or involvement is combined with several manipulations and suggestions that lead people to your point of view. Obviously, there is enormous potential in conversational hypnosis for a salesman or an instructor.

However, this type of hypnosis may sound simple, but requires skill to fully master it. Conversational hypnosis doesn't use any direct post hypnotic suggestions, making it subtler than other forms of hypnosis. The methods of using conversational hypnosis involve developing a verbal relationship that allows indirect suggestions to penetrate the subconscious mind. Additionally, a measure of confusion is brought into the process to quiet the objections of the conscious mind.

A brief look at the steps to induce conversational hypnosis will makes these principles clearer.

The first step is to build an understanding or rapport with the person. Agree with their statements, being brief in your comments. This establishes the vital degree of trust that is necessary for conversational hypnosis to succeed.

Next, a degree of confusion must be brought into the conversation to embed the hypnotic suggestions that will follow. This disarms the critical thinking process and will allow the desired thoughts to penetrate the subconscious mind. To establish confusion in conversational hypnosis, it's best not to become confrontational, but to merely put a "but" in your sentences as you look at the other side of the issue. You need to establish resistance, but must not become aggressive or obvious.

Perhaps you could say, "Well, it looks like this (and here is where you inject your desired thoughts) is the best way to go after all."

The suggestion phase of conversational hypnosis needs to be both sensitive and subtle. It must appear that you have taken part in the other person's thinking process and that together you have both agreed to this common solution.

Understandably, conversational hypnosis is valued in the business world. Whether a person is selling a product or an idea, conversational hypnosis can gently steer someone to your point of view. Most importantly, it is an ethical way of attracting the thoughts and directing the desires of your listeners.
